Handbook

Student Expectations

1. Follow directions.

2. Complete assignments. Work is assigned each day, and is due the following day unless otherwise stated. There is usually sufficient time to

complete work in class if you choose to use your time wisely.

3. Keep your hands, feet, body, and objects to yourself.

4. No bullying; this includes rude gestures, teasing, bad language, and putdowns.

5. Use technology appropriately. We are surrounded with technology tools in our classroom, and you are expected to use the technology with care in order to continue the privilege of using it.

Late Assignments

In most cases, assignments are due the following day during the same class period. If an assignment is not completed, you may lose recess in order to get it done. Every other Friday we will have "Fun Friday;" if your work is done you will get to participate in a fun activity; if not, you will need to finish your work during that time

Make-Up Work Folder

When your child is absent, an assignment folder will be filled out and in the office by 3:00 for you to pick up, or it can be sent home with a sibling or a neighbor at your request. Your student will have the same number of days that he/she was absent to complete the assignments.

TRC (Technology Rich Classrooms)

Our classroom has been participating in a grant from the state of Kansas that supplies us with technology for student and classroom use. With this privilege comes extra responsibility. In order to manage the classroom efficiently and effectively, students and parents will be required to sign an acceptable use policy. This policy outlines the technology expectations and restrictions in our classroom. ANY violation of policy will results in a loss of technology privileges for a time determined by the teacher. Many student assignments will be submitted online directly to the teacher for grading. This means that not as many paper assignments will be coming home. Be sure to ask if you have any concerns about your student's grades or progress.

Reading Awards

Sunflower Reader - This is a reading award your child receives for reading 20 books on his/her reading level during the school year. Of the 20 required books, six of them must be from specific genres: poetry, fiction, biography, information, folk tale/fairy tale, and William Allen White Award nominee. The other 14 books can be a combination in your child's choice of any of the genres. We require that your child read a minimum of five books each nine weeks to fulfill the goal.

William Allen White-Students are encouraged to read at least one William Allen White nominee each month. For each month your child chooses to do this, he or she will be invited to eat lunch in the library, and will get a special dessert and a dog tag.

Book-It & Braum's Book Buddies- Both of these programs are "extras" that your child may choose to participate in. Students receive credit for Book-It by recording the amount of time they read each night on a calendar provided by the teacher, having parents sign, and handing it in at the end of each month. Students need to read 20 minutes a night on five nights/week in order to receive credit. Braum's Book Buddies credit will be given for fulfilling reading requirements in the classroom.

Grading

Fourth grade is typically a child's first experience with traditional grades.

The following grades are set according to District Policy:

90 - 100% = A

80 - 89% = B

70 - 79% = C

60 - 69% = D

Below 60% = U

Your child will always have the option of changing a "D" or a "U" on daily work to a higher grade by doing corrections. It will be his/her responsibility to do so.

Grades

You are encouraged to check your child's grades on PowerGrade on a regular basis. This will let both you and your student know where he/she is at academically. It will give your child a chance to work harder to change a lower grade, if needed, before it becomes permanent on his/her report card. You will receive a letter from the school with your username and password to access the online system. Grades will be posted on a regular basis.

Birthdays

Your child may bring treats for his/her birthday celebration. If your child has a summer birthday, we would be happy to celebrate it on his/her "half birthday." June birthdays would celebrate in December, July in January, and August in February. This eliminates a rush of treats at the end of the year and allows each child to have his/her own special day. Celebrations will normally occur around 2:40 p.m., depending on the day's schedule. We have 25 students in our class.

Classroom Parties

In 4th grade, we celebrate Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day. We will be looking for volunteers to coordinate refreshments for each of these holidays. If you would like to volunteer to help with one of our celebrations, please contact the school or email Ms. Jameson.
